This week is about
creativity, having fun and learning how to use the communication tools of our
age. Jane Chandler is a TV Producer
and Senior Reporter with BBC Spotlight in Plymouth. She's covered stories ranging from the Hungerford
Massacre to interviewing Tony Blair about Europe. She'll tell us something about her work and how the internet and new technology have changed her job completely.
Jane will take us behind the
scenes (without leaving Othona!) to learn a bit about compiling news reports and
about charity events like Children in Need. And we can try our hands at interviewing or
newsreading.
Find out how your own camera, mobile or ipod could generate
material for use on TV. The media is increasingly making use of "UGC" – User Generated Material
(translated: material sent in by the public). What sort of pictures are the broadcasters are looking for? So this is one of those weeks where mobile phones etc. ARE welcome.
Bring your video camera and ipods with camera if you have them. And
we'll have a bit of fun learning about filming. Jane is hoping to bring
a camera and sound recording equipment but this can't be guaranteed at
this stage.
We're also hoping for a visit from the local BBC TV Correspondent
for Dorset who will talk about his work. Plus there'll be a film giving
an insight into the Spotlight newsroom and hopefully some more guest
speakers. And if you have something to contribute yourself from your
own experience you can let Jane know and we'll try to include it.
This family-friendly week is
particularly geared for young people in their teens.
