| Joining
the Core
From
time to time we have vacancies within our team of six resident
core members, four long term and up to two short term. The
job description for any upcoming vacancy is shown at Vacancies.
One
or two part-time non-resident core members provide regular
help as bookkeeper and in office administration, and we have
a regular volunteer acting as groundsman.
Each
long term core member has a lead specialist role. These are:
Warden with responsibility for overall management of
the centre Deputy Warden who deputises for the Warden in his/her
absence and is responsible for co-ordinating the visitor experience,
the office activities and their administration Caterer with responsibility for developing our food
policy and menus, buying food and doing the majority of the
cooking Facilities Co-ordinator with responsibility for looking
after maintenance of our buildings and services and co-ordinating
the housekeeping
The
two Short Term Core Members take on more general roles, working
with long term core. Typically a short termer will focus mainly
on assisting either the Caterer or the Facilities Co-ordinator,
but these assisting roles may be swapped from time to time.
Everyone
contributes to cleaning, helps with cooking, and, most importantly,
devotes time and energy to being with visitors. All core members
take on additional activities, for example, liaison with facilitators,
or looking after our merchandising. This gives the opportunity
for variety, and to use or develop other skills.
Each
role requires some specific skills and experience. Don't worry
if you don't have all the skills that are asked for. If you
have the basic capability and can demonstrate a keen interest
and willingness to learn we may be able to offer the possibility
of training and development.
Othona
relies on the support of many locals and other volunteers
who help in all sorts of ways such as gardening, cleaning,
decorating. All visitors help with daily chores like washing
up and preparing vegetables and play their part in offering
worship. All the core roles include the aim of involving the
visitors and volunteers, safely and enjoyably, as part of
our aim for everyone who visits to participate in community.
